The state of Illinois is moving forward with a bill that would give driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
According to news reports, the program would make undocumented immigrants eligible for a special, three-year license to drive a vehicle. It would be a different color from a regular driver’s license. But it would not be used for identification purposes, such as for boarding a plane, buying a gun or voting.
Politicians say the bill would make the roads safer because drivers licensed under the program would be insured and tested for vision and driving ability. Estimates reveal that around 250,000 immigrants would be eligible for these new licenses.
