In recent days, the STEM Jobs Act, which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, has been approved by politicians in the U.S. House of Representatives. If it becomes law, immigrants with green cards who work in those fields would have an easier time bringing their spouses and minor children into the country with them.
There are currently about 322,000 husbands, wives and children on a two-year-long waiting list to come into this country. In the past, that wait could be as long as six years.
The proposed law issues 55,000 permanent residency visas by lottery, but automatically hands a permanent visa to immigrants working toward an advanced degree in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The measure is strongly backed by high-tech companies, and would make it easier for people trained in the United States to put their skills to work for American companies rather than non-American competitors.
