In a past article, we discussed that under Illinois law, immigrants in unlawful status who are not eligible for a Social Security Number may apply for a Temporary Visitor Driver’s License (TVDL).
This law enables immigrants who are eligible to obtain TVDLs to drive safely and legally, get tested, and buy auto insurance. The intention behind these measures is to improve road safety by ensuring that individuals, regardless of their immigration status, undergo driver training, pass tests, and obtain insurance.
Important Tips:
TVDLs are valid for driving purposes only, and are not valid for identification purposes. As such,
TVDLs are not valid for:
- Boarding airplanes
- Picking up prescriptions at pharmacies
- Signing up children for school programs
- Obtaining medical services
- Using financial services
