USCIS Replaces Sticker that Extends Validity Period of Green Cards
Legal Permanent Residents (LPRs) should file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, when their Green Cards are about to expire.
USCIS’s Past Practice to Extend Validity of Green Card for I-90 Applicants
Until January 6, 2021, United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) issued I-90 applicants a notice for a biometrics appointment and provided them with an extension sticker to extend the validity of their expired Green Cards until their new cards were processed. These actions were taken to ensure that applicants with expired or expiring Green Cards would have documentation of identity, employment authorization, and authorization to return to the U.S. from travel abroad, while they were awaiting the receipt of their new Green Cards.
USCIS’s New Practice to Extend Validity of Green Cards for I-90 Applicants
As of January 2021, USCIS no longer issued I-90 applicants with a biometrics notice or provide them with an extension sticker to extend the validity of their Green Cards. Instead, USCIS will issue a revised receipt notice which will serve to extend the validity of their Green Cards by 12 months when presented together with their expired Green Card.
