What Are Other Benefits of Asylum?
In a previous article (“What Are the Benefits of Asylum?”), we outlined the primary benefits of asylum.
Depending on your individual circumstances; including your family size, health, age, income, and savings, you may also be eligible for certain services through the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).
The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) is a program of the Administration for Children and Families, an office within the United States Department of Health and Human Services. ORR’s mission is to assist refugees with relocation services upon their entry into the U.S., and to provide needed services to individuals granted asylum within the United States to restart their lives.
You may be eligible to receive the following services through your local Refugee Resettlement Agency:
- – Cash/living expenses assistance;
- – Housing assistance;
- – Medical assistance;
- – Job training and placement;
- – English language training;
- – Assistance to apply for government benefits and services (such as an Social Security card, refugee travel document, health care, and food stamps); and
- – Psychological and employment counseling.
Although the process to seek asylum is daunting, sensitive, and lengthy; once you are granted asylum, there are many services available to assist you with your transition and rebuilding your life.
