What Are the Opponents of PICA Saying?

In a past article (What is the New Illinois Firearms Law?), we advised that the recently enacted Protect Illinois Communities Act (PICA), bans the sale, delivery and purchase of assault weapons, high-capacity magazines, and .50 caliber rifles and ammunition. We further discussed as to what actions the owners of the newly prohibited items need to take to remain in compliance with the new law.

The new law has garnered vocal opposition from some individuals and groups based upon the 2nd and 14th Amendment and that the bill’s definitions are unconstitutionally vague and forces gun owners to modify, surrender or sell newly prohibited firearms they legally purchased.
Public safety is the basis for PICA, which the individuals and groups against PICA seem to dismiss, claiming that even reasonable restrictions which promote public safety are unreasonable. The courts will likely need to settle any constitutional or reasonableness issues. We will continue monitoring legal developments on this polarizing new law.
